Who You Work For. Who Works for You.
March 17, 2014
Choosing who you work for and who works for you are two of the most important things a leader will do.
Because…
You will eventually become who you associate with, both up and down the organization.
If you work for someone who is a tyrant than don’t be surprised when you start to look and act like them, even if you don’t want to. If you work for a dictator, don’t be surprised when you start to look and act like them. If you work for a pushover, don’t be surprised… you get the point.
And… and this is the big one for leaders…
If you have people in your organization that are not a match for your culture, eventually you will do 1 of 2 things:
#1: You will compromise who you want to be to accommodate them.
#2: You will become like them.
Neither one is a good choice.
So, leaders, the thing to do is move them or remove them. It’s worth enduring temporary pain and hardship for long-term protection of the culture you want to create.
