#1: A Focus on Building Great Products & Services.
#2: A Focus on Building a Great Culture. (aka a Great Place to Work)
The problem is, most leaders only focus on #1. They think, “As long as our product is great and we’re paying people decently, then we’re succeeding.” In fact, the business world is built to support this belief. Everything rises and falls on the bottom line.
“If we’re making a profit, then we’re good right?”
“As long as we’re making money then nothing else matters…”
Until now!
With the rise of the next generation of leaders in our world today, comes a huge desire to not just build something great, but to be a part of something great! They don’t want to spend their years making great products and services for customers, and yet dread coming to work everyday.
In short, next generation leaders will gladly pass up great money to be a part of a great place to work.
And its the responsibility of the CEO or President to make sure this happens. Leaders, as Henry Cloud says in his book, Boundaries for Leaders, we are “ridiculously in charge” of the culture we create in the workplace.
So let’s do a little introspection this week…
? Do people in your office love coming to work?
? Do you have to tell them to stop having so much fun during the work day?
? Do you have to make them take all their vacation days, because they just can’t seem to get enough of what’s happening at your workplace?
? Do the people on your team thank you often for creating such a great place for them to work?
? Do they tell you stories of their friends who don’t have the kind of job they do?
If your answer to any of the questions above is anything less than an enthusiastic “Yes!” on your part, then you’ve got some room for improvement!
Now, here’s the good news: You’ve got time! and You’re ‘ridiculously in charge!’ remember?
So get after it! Start small but begin working for change!
The goal is for the people who are giving themselves for your vision day in and day out to love getting to work everyday!
Be encouraged, Leader! Making great products and creating a great place to work are both possible!
